Greek Philosophy Tour: Walking with Socrates
Where culture and democracy were born.
Where Socrates taught.
Where the ancient Athenians took their decisions.
The program starts at School Life and Education Museum in Plaka neighbourhood. The Museum is situated in the oldest street of Athens, at Tripodon Street, the street where the ancient Greek philosophers used to walk and debate for long. In the beginning, a half-hour introductory presentation along with videos and slides will help the participants to better understand the principles of philosophy.
Walking in the footsteps of the Ancient Road, we will take you then to the Theater of Dionysus, the Conservatory of Herod Atticus and the Cell where Socrates was imprisoned.
Afterwards we will be headed to the Pnyx, and we will simulate the meeting of the principal assembly of the democracy of Ancient Athens. At the Areios Pagos (Areopagus) we will take part in an intriguing debate challenging the concept of Democracy in the past and present.
Consequently, the route will take us to the Ancient Agora of Athens, where the heart of Ancient Athens hit and we will visit the places connected to Socrates: the Bouleuterion (Council) of 500 representatives, the Poikili Stoa (Painted Porch), the Prytanio, the Temple of Hephaestus and the House of Simon the Shoemaker.
Through extracts from Plato and theatrical activities we will experience the principles of his philosophy and thinking.
The walk will be concluded at Stoa of Attalos, where we can admire exhibits that will bring to touch the everyday life of the ancient Athenians.
